February 4, 2013  Monday

TNT  10:00/9:00c “Monday Mornings” Created by David E. Kelley and neurosurgeon/CNN correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, M.D comes a drama about pros and cons of being a brain surgeon.
Cast: Jamie Bamber, Jennifer Finnigan, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina
Preview: Teasers and trailers here
Forecast: Kelley does not miss when it comes to dramas. This will succeed.
Competes in schedule with: Castle, Hawai Five-O, Deception

February 14, 2013  Thursday

ABC 8:00/7:00c “Zero Hour” [CANCELLEDMagazine editor becomes involved in one the most elaborate conspiracies in human history after his wife is kidnapped.
Cast: Anthony Edwards. Michael Nyqvist, Scott Michael Foster, Carmen Ejogo and Jacinda Barrett
Preview: Several trailers and previews here
Forecast: One for early cancellation. Anthony Edwards is unlikely to carry conspiracy drama on his ex-surgeon shoulders, but good script could add enough momentum for a season or two. Note: on March 1, 2013 – the script turned out s&%t and the show was cancelled after just three episodes.
Competes in schedule with:

Big Bang Theory, Vampire Diaries

February 19, 2013  Tuesday

The CW 9:00/8:00c “CultReporter and production assistant investigate cult following of a charismatic leader. A russian nesting doll of a show – what we are watching is effectively show about making a show about a series.
Cast: Matt Davis, Jessica Lucas, Alona Tal, Robert Knepper
Preview: Territory locked trailers on broadcasters site
Forecast: Unlikely to succeed. The non linear narrative of investigative reportage mixed with mockumentary show footage (within show) and behind the scenes of the mockumentary is very unclear. Execution and handling of it by the show runners and crew is too messy. “The River” as an example of recent “show about show” novelty format, was much clearer and had much more linear plot, and yet it failed. I’d be surprised if “Cult” survived
Competes in schedule with: Comedy block on all main channels – Go On, New Girl, Happy Endings

Note: On April 10, 2013 network pulled the show off the schedule due to rating figures way below half a point. Reminder of episodes made to date might be put online at later date.

February 26, 2013  Tuesday

CBS 10:00/9:00c “Golden Boy” Cop rise to fame story told as series of flashbacks by protagonist who becomes the youngest police commissioner in NYPD history. Special previews on February 26 and March 5, then show falls back to regular slot on Fridays at 9:00/8:00c from March 8, 2013.
Cast: Theo James, Kevin Alejandro, Chi McBride, Holt McCallany, Bonnie Somerville and Stella Maeve
Preview: Yes. 42 minute preview of the pilot episode is available via CBS website
Forecast: Unlikely to go beyond initial order. A retrospective procedural show carried entirely on shoulders of a newcomer. I can’t see it becoming a hit.

Midseason is upon us! The following new shows will have their premieres in January 2013:

NBC Deception

The Cast of NBC’s “Deception”

January 7 Monday

NBC 10:00/9:00c “Deception” (formerly: “Infamous”) Undercover detective investigates death in  wealthy family.
Cast: Meagan Good, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber, Katherine LaNasa, Laz Alonso, Marin Hinkle, Ella Rae Peck.
Genre: Crime soap
Preview: Pilot is available on Hulu and here.
Forecast: No show of this type ever succeeded long term. If the first 15 minutes of the show (featuring one of the worst displays of acting this season) doesn’t scare people off then unlikable characters and flat writing should.
Competes in schedule with: Castle and Hawaii Five-O

The Cast of 1600 Penn

Even promo shots look terrible

January 10  Thursday

NBC 9:30/8:30c “1600 Penn”  Bill Pullman returns as PoTUS in comedy about dysfunctional family living in the White House.
Cast: Bill Pullman, Jenna Elfman, Josh Gad, Brittany Snow Martha MacIsaac, Andre Holland, Amara Miller.
Genre: Comedy
Preview: Pilot available on Hulu to US internauts, everyone else click here for trailer
Forecast: By far, the best casted comedy this midseason. The trailer makes the show look atrociously bad, old school and unfunny, and terribly aging 31 year old Josh Gad thinks he can still play college students, but the pilot is actually not bad and definitely does not carry that last century “one laugh every three minutes” vibe the trailer implies. Pilot also breaks this year record of cameo appearances.
Competes in schedule with: Person Of Interest, Glee

Cinemax' "Banshee"

Antony Starr in Cinemax’ “Banshee”

January 11  Friday

[Cinemax] 10:00/9:00c “Banshee“ An ex-con and master thief who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, Pennsylvania, where he continues his criminal activities, while he’s hunted by the shadowy gangsters he betrayed years earlier. 10 episode initial order.
Cast: Antony Starr, Ben Cross, Cedric Stewart, Frankie Faison, Ivana Miličević, Rus Blackwell.
Preview: Click here for trailer  and full pilot episode is available on YouTube
Genre: Action drama
Forecast: Creator of ‘True Blood” is behind it. Lead’s uncanny resemblance to Sam Worthington might help.
Competes in schedule with:  Blue Bloods

Aug 282012

On Tuesday, August 27 Fox made two pilot episodes from their fall comedy lineup available to wider audience via online services, like Hulu. While this new trend of testing the market before broadcast is getting ever more popular among major networks, FOX pulled new record by jumping almost entire month ahead, as both shows were scheduled to première on September 25.

"The Mindy Project" Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling as Dr. Mindy Lahir in “The Mindy Project”

First of the two was “The Mindy Project”. As the working title turned final cut suggests, the focus of the show is one Mindy (Lahiri), played by Mindy (Kaling – from “The Office”), thus joining short list of comedy shows this year where main character is named after portraying actor (e.g. Charlie as Charlie in “Anger Management”) as if to avoid confusing the leading actor too much with being “in character”. Mindy, (the fictional one, of “The Mindy Project”) is a twenty something, freshly made M.D. of obstetrics and gynaecology  stomping through life in Bridget’s (Jones, of the “Bridget Jones Diary”) shoes of an aspirated, driven, self sufficient single lady but with the finesse and dating habits of Carrie (Bradshaw, of the “Sex and The City” fame) and fierce bravery of Ally (McBeal, from “Ally” the show, naturally). The premise is uncomplicated, the cast is studded with doctors resembling male models and the supporting cast is full of equally pretty faces. They even dragged in Mindy’s colleague from “The Office” for a guest appearance. What could possibly fail? Well… how about the lead for starters…

MTV's "The Inbetweeners" (US)

“…dude, we look nothing like The Inbetweeners”

When US networks remake British TV series, especially cult comedy shows, we can always expect steady stream of outrage and anger from .co.uk domains. It was no different with “The Inbetweeners”. After MTV revealed first trailer promoting the US remake, the official YouTube channel was flooded with “thumbs down” ratings that would put Rebecca Black’s musical productions to shame. But in all honesty – transplanting good British scripts with good cast across the ocean more often than not – actually does work. During first season Ricky Gervais’ “The Office” replanted onto US soil was nearly word for word copy of the British original. Although American version at first visibly lacked Mackenzie Crook’s caricature Gareth and Martin Freeman’s heart warming Tim, thanks to brilliant cast it quickly outgrew the old script and found its own direction by simply focusing on character building. In matter of weeks we stopped comparing it to old show and seamlessly accepted the crew of Scranton office led by Michael Scott (arguably much easier to relate to and funnier to watch than Ricky’s own David Brent). The same can be said about Shameless. Where British original was held together by top cast for the first two short seasons and then quickly and abruptly plunged downhill, the moment writers across Atlantic took over from the imported story line in American version, Shameless US continued to grow and entertain for all the right reasons.

MTV had no such luck however. Their attempt to americanize “Skins” failed miserably, despite word for word and scene for scene transposition of the UK script. The casting choices were questionable, tweaked characters did not work together, delivery was set to shock rather than interest and eventually after 10 slow episodes the show hit the can. It felt like show runners did not understand the idea at all.

Nominations to  64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards for the best television programming between June  2011 and June 2012 were announced earlier today. Shows and artists will be awarded during ceremony  hosted by  Jimmy Kimmel  in L.A on  September 23, 2012 and televised live by ABC. Nominations as usual have several baffling classifications, for example the cast of “Nurse Jackie”  is nominated in “comedy series” groups (Ef me sideways, that’s a drama, if I ever saw one!), entire series “Sherlock” received nomination for seemingly just the first episode of season two while “Luther” currently in pre-production of 3rd season and regular  13 piece TV series “American Horror Story” currently awaiting second season have been nominated as “mini series”. HBO leads the list with 81 nominations in total, followed by CBS with 60 nominees and PBS, listed 58 times. Among series, “American Horror Story” and “Mad Men” stay up top with 17 nominations each, closely trailed by “Downton Abbey” and “Hatfields & Mccoys” both with 16 nominations and “Hemingway & Gellhorn” with 15.

Unsinkable "Falling Skies"

“I have it on good authority that we’ll have to stay on this dilapidated parking lot for at least another season”

Following what has got to be the slowest season start in history of Sci Fi TV shows, Steven Spielberg’s exec produced “Falling Skies” reportedly received full order of 10 episode season 3 of the series. This is, of course good news, Sci Fi TV series are dying breed and as rare as hens teeth these days, especially in summer slot, but I absolutely love a good whinge about this particular show because it serves as a prime example of just how odd viewer rating and ordering system of US television series is. Where less that 6 million viewers is enough to secure another year worth of lifeline to this quite expensive to produce show, we could stay all night long reading out loud long list of titles that had their plug pulled often with twice the viewer numbers and fraction of the budget.

“Falling Skies” is rumored to cost absolute fortune in production ($2.5mil+ budget per episode if you are to believe blogosphere), considering the beating and slagging it regularly receives on forums and in blog,  just how low budget it looks in some episodes (last years season finale battle, you could almost literally count the same two handful of extras running around in circles behind camera to create skirmish crowd around barricade made of few classroom desks and pile of milk crates) plus a story arc that sometimes slows down and flat lines so much it’s feels even slower than pace of recovery from Greek recession, you would imagine it would be taken off air in a heartbeat. But against all odds, this show so far remains absolutely unsinkable.

Thank you TNT I’m looking forward to complaining about this show next summer.

HBO renews "The Newsroom" for second season

..”and in other news, HBO renewed our show for second season…”

In surprising decision on July 2nd HBO renewed Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” (with Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer) for the second season despite falling viewer numbers in US.

At the moment the show enjoys very good reception and unprecedented broadcast syndication abroad. It airs simultaneously on HBO Canada, with just one day delay on HBO Hungary and HBO Poland as well as pay per view Sky Go in Germany and Austria. The show also premiered in Israel on June 30th and last night on July 2nd on HBO Netherlands. Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom and Ireland will begin broadcasting on July 10, 2012.

It’s good to know to know we are going to enjoy at least 20 episodes even if viewer numbers in US don’t give it justice. Thumbs up HBO.

Click here for my mini review of the pilot from last week.
